The Sights

Monument of Saint Pere

At the highest point of Àger is the monumental complex of Sant Pere with the Collegiate Church and the castle. It is a fortified enclosure that mixes Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles. It was built in the 11th century during the reconquest of Vall d'Àger.

Construction of the castle and the famous church began in the 14th century, and finally, in the 15th century under the mandate of Count Pere d'Urgell, the Cloister was built.

Hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Pedra

This hermitage, located at an altitude of 1,075 meters, is a symbol of the Sierra de Montsec. It was built in 1179, taking advantage of the rocks of the mountain and embedded in it, it became the most important Marian sanctuary in the Àger Valley. Visitors will enjoy incredible views of the entire valley, in the Sierra de Monclús and in the region of La Noguera.

Visit to the Montsec Astronomical Park

The Universe Observation Center (COU), located in the municipality of Àger and managed by Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), is a large recreational multi-space and is a benchmark in Catalonia in the teaching and information of astronomy and space. The COU is a link between the public and scientific knowledge, bringing the visitor closer to the exciting world of science and the discovery of the Montsec environment.

The Activities

Paragliding flight:

One of the best areas in the world to practice this sport where international championships of the highest level have been held. There is also the possibility of a flight baptism for the more adventurous.

Hang Gliding:

The Àger Valley was one of the first places in our territory where the practice of this sport began, and it continues to be one of the best areas around.

Kayaking:

We are located in the middle of 2 of the most spectacular reservoirs in Catalonia, to the west is the Canelles reservoir with its wonderful Mont-Rebei gorge, and to the east is the Camarasa reservoir with the Doll Gorge.

Mountain biking:

We have marked 460 km of roads for bicycles with routes of various difficulty levels so you can enjoy our Valley to the fullest.

Climbing:

The limestone of the Sierra de Montsec, makes this one of the best areas for practicing all kinds of climbing scenarios.

Speleology:

The Montsec mountain range has the two deepest caverns in our territory and is one of the areas with the highest concentration of caves.

Hiking:

The Àger Valley and the Montsec mountain range offer a multitude of routes to fully enjoy all the various corners.

Cultural visits:

Visitors will be able to enjoy a wide range of cultural areas such as a visit to the Observation Center of the Universe (unique in the state), routes through the churches and Romanesque hermitages in the area, ornithological routes...

Montsec Astronomical Park

Both day and night, the experience of visiting the Montsec Astronomical Park is always stunning.

This astronomical observatory is located in Montsec, where it is said that one of the cleanest and least polluted skies in Catalonia and all of Europe.

The visit begins with the central building of the COU, which houses a permanent exhibition that encompasses the various outstanding areas and obviously astronomy, but also the geology, fauna and flora of the Montsec environment play a role.

Next, the visitor can enjoy the "Ull del Montsec", a digital multimedia planetarium with a mobile dome 12 meters in diameter, where an audiovisual show is projected.

At night the session is completed with an explanation of the firmament and subsequent opening of the dome to observe the real sky and identify, with the help of a specialized monitor, some of the most outstanding elements of the night.

Finally, both during the day and at night, you can visit the Telescope Park. During the day the sun is observed and at night, the moon, the planets, the nebula.
